Pilot Centre for European Studies.

The project will provideD necessary support for the launch of  institutional pilot project – the establishment of a new Centre for European Studies at the “Stefan cel Mare” University of Suceava, Romania. Such centre will answer an increasing need raise awareness about the role of the EU in borderland and neighbourhood issues in Suceava, a county in the North- Eastern part of Romania, linked to the Ukrainian border and with an important flux of border migration (for professional, commercial and academic-related purposes). The county of Suceava lies in the historic region of Bukovina – the Ukrainian-Romanian borderland region – a region with different cultural, identity and historical strands shared by both the Romanian and Ukrainian community. Such borderland regions shared by neighbouring countries are typical in Eastern Europe, where past territorial shifts have often divided historic communities. Hence, the establishment of the centre could serve as a model for the institutionalization of the relations in the borderland, since such centre will not only provide valuable information about the borderland territories, the role the EU plays in cross-border cooperation, but it will also offer resources for undertaking research and teaching in the field of European Studies, CBC and neighbouring relations. Moreover, it will contribute to the enhancement of the European dimension of the studies offered by the University of Suceava and subsequently help the local academic staff to develop educational programmes for Romanian and Ukrainian students having the European field of study as centrepiece. In addition, such centre will lay the basis of a durable partnership and a common commitment towards the advance of the academic excellence in European Studies which can be later on exported to other borderland regions from our network and beyond. The support for developing such a centre at the University of Suceava ir was offered by the institutions from the network which already have built expertise in this regard and, thus, are now being able to transfer knowledge and experience to the other partner institutions from the network. For instance, the Centre for European Studies of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi has already been involved in developing strong partnerships particularly with academic institutions from Chisinau, Moldova, and Chernivtsi, Ukraine. The main aim of the Centre from the University of Suceava is, besides the expertise and knowledge transfer, the maximization of specialized and inter- disciplinary European Studies attractiveness as a field of professional competences, education, and research. Such an endeavour will, in turn, help the consolidation of European studies by using a diversity of cross-border cooperation relationships and by guiding the educational process in the European studies from the neighbouring countries to reach the EU standards. Moreover, by establishing a Centre for European Studies at Suceava University we also aim at helping to improve their logistic base, for the purpose to attract in the future EU funding for the building of a strong trans-border cooperation network as an instrument of long lasting collaboration between the universities from the countries members of the network. From the very beginning, ENACTED provide the necessary conditions for the new Centre for European Studies from the University of Suceava to function: transfer of knowledge on how to develop new library and information facilities (particularly, the establishment of an European Documentation Centres), access to databases, updated websites, increased mobility schemes mainly (but not limited to) between the Romanian and Ukrainian communities, training programmes for the staff on the Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 opportunities, on developing new educational programmes, information programmes for local NGOs, etc. The centres will also aim at stimulating cross-border cooperation and encourage the exchange of staff and students throughout the project’s lifespan, and beyond.
